Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
