Heartbreaking Update on UPS Incident: Fatalities Increases to 13

The tally of fatalities resulting from the UPS cargo plane which ignited and crashed has now reached 13, according to official statements.

City Leader's Statement

While en route to the Teamsters’ vigil, I was informed of a 13th person that lost their life as a consequence of the aircraft incident,” stated the city mayor in a public communication. “My thoughts is with the families, friends and colleagues of all who were taken in this week’s disaster. We will get through this collectively.”

Deceased Named

A release from the company identified the pilots on board the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.

“Our hearts reach out to all UPSer who has been touched and everyone in our local region – assisting you and ensuring you receive the attention and assistance you need is our focus,” the organization’s message read.

Investigation Details

National investigators revealed that the freight aircraft’s port side wing burst into flames and an motor fell off shortly after departure from the aviation hub, causing the jet to plummet and explode into a fireball.

The National Transportation Safety Board stated it is investigating the aircraft’s service record, that was in Texas for repairs a period prior to the accident.

Flight tracking data revealed the aircraft was on the runway in San Antonio, Texas from 3 September to last week.

“We are knowledgeable that this plane was located in the facility,” stated an NTSB member on later, without a specific period. “We will review every piece of repairs that was performed, including the repair visit, right up to the time of the trip.”

Findings of Key Components

The pilot’s recorder and data recorder were retrieved, and the engine was located on the tarmac.

The recorders – referred to as flight recorders – were built to survive accident forces and severe fire from fires, and they seemed to be undamaged when located amid the wreckage. Investigators intend to reviewing data from the recorders.

Aircraft’s last flight details displayed an elevation of 475 ft and a rate of 210 miles per hour before the impact.

Service Record

Per Federal Aviation Administration documents from 18 September, a fracture on a part in the center wing fuel tank needed maintenance.

Headquartered in Singapore ST Engineering, which said it provides structural repairs for the company’s aircraft and manages a service location in Texas, declined to provide remarks, but stated it would work closely when officials reached out it.

Activities Continue

At the same time, the hub services resumed last night with its express also known as evening process, representative Jim Mayer stated. All three tarmacs at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also reopened.

The UPS package handling facility in this location is the organization’s largest. The hub engages more than a large number of workers in the region, manages numerous trips per day and sorts more than four hundred thousand packages an hour.

Local Reaction

A memorial was held on the evening of that date by the local labor union, which represents employees at the aviation hub, the organization’s largest shipping facility.

The union chapter, which represents employees, started the gathering with a quiet tribute at 5.14pm, the rough hour of the incident before.

“This incident was so unexpected, so surprising,” the mayor told the assembly of attendees. “No one had a moment to part to any of those who we have said farewell to.”
