A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
