A group of seven alleged members of Germany's far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
